On September 9, the first day of the G20 Summit 2023, which India was in charge of, proved to be incredibly successful and historic. The day, which began with Prime Minister Modi warmly welcoming all heads of state and government from across the world, came to a close with a regal banquet given by Droupadi Murmu, the President of India. The first day of this worldwide gathering came to a close with complete agreement on a number of subjects, including the Delhi Declaration, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, and permanent G20 membership for the African Union.
India Had Three Significant Victories On The First Day Of The G-20 Summit: –
1- The agreement for the Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor: – Together with US Vice President Biden, Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman, and EU officials, PM Modi signed an MoU on this massive infrastructure initiative. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China is being compared to this new route. India and the Middle East will be linked through the water in this. Along the route will also be installed an optical fiber cable and an oil-gas pipeline. This will improve communication between Europe, the Arabian Gulf, and Asia. In addition, it is considered as a means of boosting economic growth via economic integration. There will be two independent corridors.
It will have a rail connection that, when finished, will offer a dependable and cost-effective cross-border ship-to-rail travel network. The Eastern Corridor, which connects India with the Gulf area, and the Northern Corridor, which links the Gulf region with Europe, are included in this, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. It will be a hybrid of a rail, road, and ship-rail transit system. Let us inform you that Italy just cut ties with China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
2- The New Delhi Declaration was agreed upon: – India made significant progress on the opening day of the G-20 summit in New Delhi. Declaration made in New Delhi while India was the chair. This was unanimously stated by PM Narendra Modi during the summit’s “One Family” session. After 150 hours of protracted negotiations among the member nations throughout the year, the proclamation was finally agreed upon. On every single one of the manifesto’s 83 sentences, there was unanimity. In the G-20’s history, this has never before occurred. Actually, there were two significant obstacles to the manifesto’s distribution. to come to an agreement on the first declaration, which was unable to be done at the previous G-20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia. Second, Russia ought to be watching Ukraine. India handled each of these problems diplomatically and expertly. It was stated that now is not the time for conflict and that all parties should respect each other’s boundaries without explicitly denouncing Russia’s strike. The coalition of western nations lead by America received backing at the same time, which prevented them from being firm about taking harsh action against Russia in the Ukraine crisis.
3- India added the African Union as a new permanent member to the G-20. This group is now known as G-21: – India announced the addition of the African Union as a permanent member at the G-20 Summit, heralding the arrival of the “G-21” to the globe. We hope that every nation will accept our proposition, Prime Minister Modi remarked. G-20 will now be referred to as G-21. The fact that Modi merely started the project three months ago has also contributed to this achievement. With 55 members, the African Union’s GDP is around Rs 250 lakh crore. In addition, there are 140 crore people. The African Union will now be a permanent member of the “Group of 20” (G20), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on September 9, 2023, just before the start of the inaugural session. The importance of India’s G20 Presidency in amplifying the voices of the Global South was again emphasized by the Prime Minister. Azali Assoumani, the head of the African Union, was invited to join the group, and the meeting then started. With the hope of a better future for the Global South, PM Modi welcomed the African Union to the G20 fold.
